Biography: David Mallen CBE

A graduate of Manchester University, Mr Mallen, a teacher, has extensive experience of local education authority management.

He was Chief Education Officer of the Inner London Education Authority and subsequently held the same post in East Sussex.

He went on to develop his career as an adviser to ministers and civil servants on a wide range of educational issues.

He was the first chair of the Examination Appeal Board, and he led the start up of London Challenge and the National Languages Programme.

He was also Chairman of the Sentencing Advisory Panel for 10 years.

David was awarded a CBE in 1999 and he is a visiting Professor at London University’s Institute of Education and the University of Greenwich.
