Council approves plans for Academy consultation

Jan 11, 2010

E-ACT is the proposed new sponsor of an academy at Parklands Girls’ High School in Leeds.

Councillors on the Executive Board have given the go ahead to hold a formal consultation to discuss future plans for the school, and two others in the city.

Parklands Girls’ High, along with City of Leeds and Primrose High School, all of which are included in the government’s National Challenge programme, will run consultations until 5th March 2010 with public meetings being held at each of the schools. The consultation will run alongside a city-wide discussion on the future of a girls only provision in Leeds.

E-ACT is proposing to establish a new state-of-the-art academy at the Parklands site, as part of its ongoing programme of academy developments.  If approved proposals will go ahead in 2011.

E-ACT’s Leeds West academy opened in September 2009, and will move into new facilities in 2011.

Councillor Richard Harker, executive board member for education at Leeds City Council, said: “Public opinion is a vital part of the decision making process. We recognise that major changes for the three schools have been proposed and want to fully engage with everyone connected to the schools to gather their opinions. This consultation will ensure that all views will be taken into consideration by the executive board before a final decision is made.”

Sir Bruce Liddington, the former Schools Commissioner, and Director General for EACT said: “Our vision is to develop the best opportunities for students, staff and the wider community that our academies serve. It is important to ensure that the views of the people who are most affected by the proposals are taken into consideration”.

Consultation for Parklands Girls’ High School will take place at the school in South Parkway, Leeds, on Tuesday 23rd February 2010, 7pm.
