Visit to Parliament for Crest Girls’ debating champions

Dec 21, 2009

Government Minister and Brent MP Dawn Butler, and Sarah Teather, MP for Brent East, praised year 8 students from EACT’s Crest Girls’ Academy for their outstanding debating talents at a recent competition.

The students who have been learning skills with members of the English Speaking Union, held a competition organised by Citizenship Teacher Mrs Laura Markey, to compete in a series of heats across the eight house groups. The Final, judged by the local politicians and watched by a large audience of local dignitaries, students, parents and staff, debated on whether the voting age should be lowered to 16. The competition won by Amber House, proved a great success.

Dawn Butler, the new Minister for Young Citizens and Youth Engagements said: “There was an amazing amount of talent displayed, and the girls excelled in their debating skills.”

The girls, who received personal feedback on their performance, were thrilled to be invited by Dawn Butler MP, to the Houses of Parliament to participate in a listening panel for the national debate on the very same issue.
