Top eco-architect to review new Sheffield academy's green credentials
Lucian Kroll – who recently designed an award-winning eco-school in Caudry, France – will set out his radical vision ahead of plans for a new academy which will be built on the site of the current Parkwood School, Penrith Road, to open in September 2011.
The lecture, on Thursday 02 July, is open to the public and forms part of a series of consultation and planning events organised by EACT – the sponsors of the new academy which opens in existing buildings in September.
EACT is organising a series of discussions and events to raise awareness and provoke discussion about options for the new academy’s design. As well as providing a 21st Century new base for the Parkwood Academy, the building will be open for community use.
Yasmin Shariff, EACT architectural adviser, said: “Lucien Kroll is known for incorporating local history, local views and connecting culture and the environment in his designs. He is an architect who works better when he can get others excited about his work. I’m sure he’ll inspire us with ideas and provoke debate. His ‘super-green school design in France is truly inspirational.”
Academy Principal (designate) Chris Mallaband said the events held so far have provoked debate and enthusiasm for the project. He said: “We want a building that inspires learning and also acts as a beacon for the community.
“These are the early stages of creating a design brief so that architects can go away and start putting together some detailed proposals. I’m keen to encourage new and future pupils and their families to engage in the process because the new academy will be an important part of the local community for many years to come.”
The lecture and discussion takes place on Thursday 02 July at Parkwood School, Penrith Road, Sheffield, S5 8UF, starting at 6pm. Tel: 0114 231 0221.
