Funding milestone as two new academies prepare to open in Birmingham

Jun 2, 2009

The development of two new academies in Birmingham reached a major milestone after the Government signed  funding agreements with multi-academy sponsor, Edutrust Academies Charitable Trust (EACT).

Heartlands and Shenley academies are now on track to open in September after funding for each scheme was approved by ministers. The decision follows detailed consultation with parents, governors and the wider community in the Nechells and Northfield areas.

EACT, led by Director General Sir Bruce Liddington, the former Schools Commissioner, will open the academies in their existing premises in September, before moving to new state-of-the-art academy buildings in 2011.

Sir Bruce Liddington said: “EACT is committed to significantly improving education and development opportunities for young people in Birmingham and this is great news for pupils who will be attending our academies. We will be focusing on achieving educational excellence and we’re investing in new technology and new buildings which will be a boost for pupils and the local economy.”
