Here we ask Ian Horgan, Assistant Headteacher at Shenley Academy why he decided to become a teacher.

If truth be told it was never my intention to become a teacher. My parents were keen on the idea which evoked a natural response of rebellion from a teenager who, as you can imagine, thought he knew better!

It was not until after I had completed my music degree at Cardiff University followed by a summer working in the US when I finally decided to take the plunge and apply for a place on a PGCE (Secondary) course at UWIC.

Following my first placement I was still unconvinced that teaching was the vocation for me, but during my second placement at St Cenydd’s in Caerphilly, my passion for teaching and indeed education really did begin to flourish. The rest, as they say, is history.

Almost twenty years on and three schools later I now teach music at Shenley Academy where, in my role as Assistant Headteacher, I am fully committed to ensuring that the learning experienced by our students is both aspirational and inspirational.
